SmarTrip

I’m so glad this system is up and running! The app is user friendly and I like having one place to manage my cards, get on the go transit info for rail and bus, and list my favorite stations. That said, I decided to keep my old card as a backup and setup a new one for mobile use. My one criticism is that the process to setup the auto reload isn’t intuitive. Adding money to your card via the Apple Wallet is different from using the app to add funds to your card via Smartrip. An auto reload option directly via Apple Wallet would be easier to manage. I do like that I can get alert when my balance falls below a certain amount. Using the Smartrip card on my Apple Watch makes getting in/out of the system so convenient. And I believe safer since I don’t have to get my phone out. One thing I’ve noticed, however, is that my Smartrip card balance doesn’t seem to update on my Apple Watch. And no transaction info is available. The most current info is found within the Smartrip app but not my watch. I had to transfer my card back to my iPhone to get the info to update on my watch. Not so helpful. If my watch can’t keep track of my current balance, how will I get the alert that my balance is below a certain point? Please help me figure this out. Otherwise a job well done. 😊

I couldn’t find any information on how to have the card appear in Apple Wallet. Other apps will usually offer a prompt during the installation process. To add to wallet: After installing app, open Apple Wallet and use the (+) in the upper right to see available cards to add. You will need the physical card.

This app would be more useful if it also included real-time bus arrivals. Instead, it only provides schedules arrivals...which I did not know when planning my commute tow work. According to the app, I should have been on my bus 6 minutes ago. According to the wmata website (using real-time data), the bus hasn’t even started its route. Unfortunately, now I will miss the train I needed to get to work on-time...and at least the next train after that. If the website has real-time data, why doesn’t the app?

My problem is more within the wallet app. You add cash to your digital smartrip but it doesn’t update the remaining left after a trip. For example. You add $10 & then you take a trip. The remaining balance doesn’t update so you’ll have to check this app for the updated remaining balance.

When I type my last name, which has a hyphen, they won’t let me create my account, saying “special characters or numbers are not allowed”. EDIT: Yes, I was able to create my account however when I tried to add value to my SmarTrip card I also had problems. I tried to pay with my debit card and they asked me for my name as it appears on my card. I tried to type in my last name, which is hyphenated on my card, but when I typed in the hyphen it didn’t work.
