CUPS - Your Local Coffee Fix

If you're looking to find new coffee shops around NYC (that aren't Starbucks!) you have to download this app. I have found so many great coffee shops thanks to Cups, and the 15% discount doesn't hurt either :) Plus, I can pay via the app, which means you can also grab a coffee when you forget your wallet at home, or like I often do, on the way home after a run.

This used to be my favorite app on my phone. I told everyone I knew about it and even got a coffee shop to join it after repeated requests. I'll now be deleting it when my subscription runs out. The point of this app was to prepay for coffee, allowing me to save large sums of money in exchange for giving my business to CUPS shops. Now all it does is offer a small discount if you buy individual cups through the app. Why even bother. What's the point of the app even existing anymore? Would you get venture funding for this idea? "We're going to make an app that gives people small percentages off at some places they shop." No. Change it back. Please.

I pretty much exclusively get my coffee through CUPS these days. They make it way easy to find good coffee wherever I'm at in the city without resorting to Starbucks, and the 15% discount keeps my caffeine addiction from blowing my budget. Sometimes they even do free coffee giveaways at certain shops! Overall, awesome.

I loved this app when it had prepaid coffee plans. Since it switched to pay-per-use, the cost of coffee sometimes doubles, depending on where you go. There goes the app's value proposition. The plans were convenient and cheap, and I loved telling people about them. It was always a good talking point. But now, there's really no reason for me to use the app. Why would anyone use it now? In terms of cost, you might as well go to a large chain for a cheaper cup of coffee. In terms of convenience, the benefits are negligible. The app should go back to offering prepaid plans in tandem with pay-per-use users.

When I tried to sign up with the service via the app it would not send me an email confirmation. I tried several times without luck. I preferred not to but I ended up signing in with my google account. That’s way too much friction for new users. Regarding features, I was surprised to find out I was unable to order online. That really makes this just a coupon app, having to awkwardly order on the phone and show the cashier.
