There are no retroflex consonants in the Teochew language, like sh, tch. The southern Chinese dialects (Cantonese, Hokkien, Wu, Hakka) all don’t have these consonants. But they have a very plentiful and complex vowel system. Over 30 million people speak Teochew dialect. It is primarily spoken at home or between close friends. They speak the Common Chinese (Mandarin) when at school or doing business. This app gives you a taste of the Teochew dialect! 潮语又称潮州话，也称潮汕话，是闽南话的一个支系，也是现今全国最古远、最特殊的方言之一。流行于粤东地区的闽方言，过去称为“潮州话”，现在一般称做“潮汕方言”，简称为“潮语”。潮州话始于唐、宋年间，并在明末清初时期形成自己独立的语言体系。9世纪约唐代开始至15世纪期间，为了逃避战乱，一些福建汉人往海边迁徙，到达广东潮州一带。
