Scenic Motorcycle Navigation

Unbelievably good. I am spending some time tackling classic high alpine routes in the alps in my trusty 993 Porsche, on my own. In days of old I would have bought proper paper maps, planned a route and navigated it with frequent stops. I figured in the modem era I could manage with an iPhone, google maps and Waze, plus off line coverage from proper maps where gps location will position me on the map. Wrong. It’s really hard to set correct way points and even if you do it as you go, the minute you go wrong the route gets recalculated possibly not the way you want, and if you lose data coverage it becomes very difficult indeed. After a day getting seriously off planned route in the Vosges I thought there has to be a better answer. 40 minutes work to find this on line, download it, figure out how to use it and set up a 150 mile route over two classic Alpine passes via tiny roads. Enough free functionality in it to try it and see how it works - but it’s absolutely brilliant for this type of touring. Essentially it sticks to the route you planned in advance, and if you come off it will take you back to it. Lots of other great functionality as well. Top app!

If you are a biker who likes to explore and create new routes or a car driver on a touring holiday, then Scenic is the GPS app for you! As a “navigate to destination” app it is functional and effective, but nothing really sets it apart from the competition. However, Scenic comes into its own when you want to create a specific custom route for sightseeing or just great riding - then hit the roads! Scenic is by far the best app I’ve come across for creating a custom route that goes where you want to - and not where the app decides you ought! One of Scenic’s best features is the ability to sync routes between devices. Make full use of the larger screen and create a new route on your iPad then sync it with Scenic on your iPhone and immediately you’re good to go using your phone as your bike or car Sat Nav. Of course, you can also import routes that others have created from a variety of sources. Scenic is already a 4.5+ star app - if the major new update due to be released soon addresses its very few minor shortcomings then it will possibly be the “perfect” GPS / Sat Nav app!

Scenic App is amazing for navigation on short and long trips. It is incredibly easy to set up and very functional. Route and locations can be saved and it records your trips which includes the top speed, average speed and any pauses in the trip etc. You can publicly share your routes and also have a bit of friendly competition with a Rank system for the amount of miles you rack up. My only criticism is that it would be useful to have a speed camera warning feature just to support safety etc. The app does indicate your speed and how much over the limit you are but a warning about upcoming camera would also benefit to ensure you do stick to it, especially in cities. Could there also be a feature that means when someone calls you on the phone, when the call is finished it sends you straight back to the app? I’ve noticed that it sends the phone onto lock mode so you can no longer see the map. Instructions vocally continues throughout the call so it’s only a minor point.

I’ve been using this app for the last few days in Wales and it’s been absolutely brilliant. I initially had the routing option set at curvy but found some of the roads were like goat tracks, fun in their own way but a bit muddy etc. I then set curvy highway option and I have found this to be exceptional. The roads have been excellent and often just off the normal beaten track so traffic has been less of an issue too. But, if you want a quicker blast home you can set efficient and it’ll get you there a bit faster. Lots of options, very user friendly and I couldn’t recommend this more highly. What is also great is that as a new user I got 20 free credits to trial the apps premium features. I am very pleased to see that there are options for not only permanent subscriptions but pay as you go. Great flexibility which supports any user. Thanks Guido, fantastic work.

I use this whilst motorcycling. I’ve been using google maps for years but it has the irritating habit of taking you the way it wants to go rather than the option you chose. Earlier this year I buckled and bought a Garmin. Biggest waste of £300 ever. Slow, buggy and then died within months. That’s an ongoing claim! So anyway, with all these GPX routes I’d created in basecamp (don’t even get me started on the POS!) a friend suggested Scenic. After he had showed me how to do a few things it’s been a revelation. It actually works and as it’s on my up to date smart phone it is way better than the Garmin could ever dream of being. OK, so down sides, and these are minor niggles given this is made by one man. I find creating routes a little fiddly but still way easier than basecamp! I’d like it to say actual road names and have speed camera alerts. With that said, it’s the best thing I’ve found so far if you like to create, import or share routes and I love the auto tracking as I export that to relive to get a pretty animated map of the day’s riding.
