I have opened the RTE player so many times today and it collapses and shuts down immediately. I have tried to login but it shuts down and Zion have tried deleting the app several times and downloading from the App Store again but I still can’t watch it, some times it opens onto the live feed with no sound and when zi touch the picture sound comes on then it shuts down and out of the app, other times up until this week and over Christmas it was playing as if another program opened at the same time like an echo in the sound constantly. Today it is not working at all and just shuts down after opening. I have a recent iPad 6th generation with only myself using very little so there is no problems here everything else works. I personally think that RTE are trying to force people back to a tv to pay the licence but I would not watch it as I only watch replays occasionally and the news sometimes due to being too busy. What a rotten set up, terrible player and app. Nothing but problems. I have written to the, many times and they reply but never fix it. One time watching the Eurovision last year it went down and I notice that it was myself and my friends apple products but my Samsung phone kept working but we couldn’t get it to work on any apple iPad, lap top or phone and we tried all

I’m a student living abroad for a year and I wish I could use the RTÉ player app and website more reliably. If I could begin to watch something safe in the knowledge the site/app wouldn’t crash constantly or get so frustrated by lagging pictures, buffering or like what happened today the audio playing twice on top of each other at slightly different speeds and volume, then I’d be happy but apparently that’s to much to ask. RTÉ asks for more money and a higher license fee costs but they can’t even provide a decent online platform. People who’ve emigrated from Ireland or who are living away from Ireland for a short period of time should be able to watch the news, catch up with old programmes or like at the moment actually be able to follow the election coverage online without all the hassle that currently comes with trying to access something on the player. By providing such a bad service you just turn people off the programs you provide unless they can see them directly on the tv and so you lose the viewership of all those living abroad which I frankly think is such a shame. Other broadcasters can provide a reliable and free online platform so why can’t you?????

I have previously put a review on here for this app which I’ve copied below. The same issues are still happening months later & we now have a new addition with similar programmes to the ones you are watching at the bottom of the large screen. This prevents you from forwarding the programme to where you had left off previously because it doesn’t restart where you left off. It’s so frustrating. The developers really need to review All 4 or Virgin Media Player to get some ideas on how to make the app better & so much more user friendly. Glad to see I’m not the only one having issues with this app since the upgrade. The ads are way too long, you can restart with a programme where you left it without having to watch all the ads again. The programmes keep sticking but the sound keeps going but funnily enough if you need to restart you have to watch the ads again. Really not ideal for on the move. Frustrating to say the least.

Lots of good things but the ads are awful, too many, too long. Still paying the licence fee so feel double charged here. Also what happened to the “favourites” feature which was very handy? Now seems you to have to search for programmed one by one! Update: Watched part of a programme, could not finish it due visitors. Log back in, next day, have to start again, watch ads, fast forward to where I thought I’d left off, another almost four minutes of ads, some repeated within the same block. The old system allowed you to resume where you’d left off and this is gone too. Fast forward again and, surprise surprise, more ads. This is ridiculous. Six minutes of ads and brought back to the start again. Advice: don’t watch long programmes unless you can do it in one sitting and can tolerate multiple long ad breaks. Will go back to recording on TV, this is useless despite the much better quality picture.

When you use the app, if you want to stop watching in the middle of the episode it won’t remember when you return where in the episode you stopped watching. It also doesn’t remember the last episode you watched. You don’t know when the ads are about to start and because it doesn’t remember where you were in an episode, when you go back into an episode you part watched you have to watch the ads at the start again and after you fast forward you’re forced to watch more ads again! Fast forwarding and rewinding is a awkward and can easily move too far ahead and get caught with ads again!! The app also crashes occasionally. The revamp is crap! They should of created an App like All4 which is excellent and operates similar to Netflix
