R-TYPE II

PROS: the game has solid classic SFX and graphics. if you were a fan of space gunners like Raiden or this one back on the SNES you will be hard pressed to be disappointed. the upgrades are all retro overpowered and crazy as you delve further but it makes dying that much more tense when you have to sart over with your pea shooter from level one. new players might not get the same stoked vibe as older players but it's fun non the less and the whole feel of it is very nostalgic. CONS: ok so I'm playing this on an iPhone and it's very common for games like this to be pretty hard to play on the more difficult levels because you can't tell what's going in with your fingers blocking the action. probably not an issue on tablets, but consider getting a stylus if you are on a cellphone. also would be nice if there was a password function although I know this may be a lot to ask for on a game like this, and we do at least get to pause the game. but still, password function would be nice for quick play and go type recovery.

Game plY is how I remember it. However, the lack of X support has a huge issue. The left 1” if the screen is not used and therefore it’s easy for your finger to drift into that unrecognized part of the screen which means you’ve lost control. Please add support.

It's SO FREAK'N GREAT having both this and the original R-Type available on my phone. These two games were the first shmups that I ever played and the fact hat I'm playing them almost 30 years later is a testament to how incredibly amazing they are. And... thousands of people are in the same boat as I am - so, if you're questioning yourself while hovering over the 'buy' button, I'll just say this:;: DotEmu has done a FANTASTIC job porting this over to the touch-screen. There's plenty of options and the relative touch controls are P E R F E C T. You can also play with a virtual joystick if that's what you'd like, and they included the option to move all the buttons around and resize them. It also has MFi support - so if a controller is more up your alley, you're set. You can also change the video settings so that the aspect ratio is 1:1 to the original. You can toggle the graphic filtering on and off and you can also add scan lines if that's your thing. They've also added an unlimited mode so that you can play all the way through to the end with an infinite amount of continues - as well as an Insane mode that you can unlock after beating the game on Normal. All of this to say - THIS PORT IS PERFECT! If you're an R-Type fan, there's no reason you shouldn't get this. If you're a shmup fan, there's no reason you shouldn't smash that BUY button. And if you're curious about one of the best shoot 'em ups of ALL TIME - you needn't worry about getting an inferior version - in fact, I choose to play this version rather than the PlayStation version I have sitting under my TV - it's THAT. Love this game when it was a quarter operated arcade game, and loved it on the PlayStation (R-Type Final). I'm able to almost finish the game on those platforms, but on the iPad Air, I can't even get pass stage2! The virtual D-pad is near impossible, while touch is near spot-on. However, it's almost impossible to dodge the hordes of bullets/missles when your finger/hand is blocking the screen/view! PLEASE add an easy mode option, when folks can pass easy mode, they can move on to normal and insane. Great job with the sounds/graphics. Please update graphics to be more like R-Type Final!
