NECN: Local New England News

I really was only interested in the weather part of this App since I used the old NECN Weather App and they discontinued it. I like how your can have the weather open automatically when you launch the App. The weather portion of the App is very well done. The News section on my IPad is rather annoying, if you click on a story then return to the main news feed it takes you to the top of the news feed, not where you left off so you have to scroll down to get back to where you left off. And the Sports section is formatted differently than the News, also doesn’t seem to include sports schedules for the different teams. All in all a decent App, especially the weather part.

I used the NECN weather app for many years. A year or so ago it started bugging me to upgrade to their full news+weather app. But I liked the weather app so much I put up with and ignored their prompt every day. Recently the old app stopped working so I gave this new one a try. Meh. Not as concise and useable as the old one. Lots more scrolling required to see info that was right up front before (like 10 day forecast). Horizontal scrolling (on hourly, for example) shows less data at a time than old vertical scrolling). MANY more ads interspersed with the data, along with new layout and color scheme, make it harder to pick out the data at a glance. I'll be looking for a better weather app. Update: I gave it a month to see if it's just my reaction to change. No, the new app just isn't as good, for the reasons I listed above. Just not as quick, easy, and clear as the old one. Too much scrolling, too much clutter. I find that I just don't use it nearly as much as the old one because it's just not that good. Streamline the new one to be more like the old one, and I'll give it another try.

Just downloaded the app. Had read reviews here, where the developer wrote that you can set your start screen so the app “feels like a weather app,” however, clicking on the NECN on the top left does NOT bring up a menu that lists that as an option (on ios- iPhone). Am I missing something, or has that feature been taken away? Hoping it’s the former, as I liked the older weather app; it’s the main reason I downloaded this news app. If there’s no option anymore to set your home screen, making it necessary to wade through a lot of other items just to navigate to what I really want to see, then I question whether I have use for it. Have read the FAQ for the answer to this question and could not find an answer. Might anyone please help?

Update: The app has improved! Easy to set different locations now. It's my go to source for current and upcoming weather wherever I'm headed. Thanks for the improvements! Original review: Loved the original NECN Weather app. Update with News app is not an improvement! Not easy to set locations, and have to scroll forever to get daily and hourly updates. I'll stick with original NECN weather app as long as I can!

I liked the old version but I understand that it could not be updated for the new iOS. However the new version has problems with the weather. The scrolling is very jerky if you change location when it changes the map. Also when you change location the hourly forecast does not change. Try the winter forecast in Boston and Orlando. It will show the same hourly forecast for both. It also does not update the hourly forecast if you reopen it later in the day. The only way around this is to completely terminate the app not just close it.
