Dutch Golden Age painter Vermeer captivated the world with a portrait of this girl (who many believed to be his daughter). In fact, Vermeer had eleven children in all, and there is every chance that one of his daughters became the face of one of the world's greatest paintings! Van Gogh's life and art Van Gogh was born and raised in a pastor's family in the Netherlands. He passed on the opportunity to live the comfortable life of an art dealer and a respected pastor to pursue his true calling as a professional painter. Even though Van Gogh's artworks are extremely valuable now, he created these artworks with the financial support of his younger brother Theo as no one was interested in buying his paintings at the time. Constantly on the move, Van Gogh travelled from his native country of Netherland to Belgium, before again moving to France where he settled in Paris. In 1888 he relocated to the southern French countryside for the warmer weather and brighter sunlight.
