LoopTree

LoopTree is an incredible looking looper that allows for a pretty ingenious workflow when working with vocals or other IRL instruments. Definitely a nice addition to the iOS music making toolkit - a good in between as we wait out Loopy Masterpiece. However, there's a lot of missed potential here re: it's functionality alongside other apps as part of a larger workflow. Audiobus integration is nearly nonexistent -- one can route an already looping sound in the background and press record in LoopTree at just the right moment, but when LT is chained in the background it doesn't have a record button. This keeps the app from capturing live audio from any other app, unless you're using an iPad Air 2 on iOS 9 and can run two apps side by side. Audiopaste seems broken, though one Audiobus forum member said they were able to import .WAV at 44.1 kHz. Otherwise, app crashes. This file restriction is pretty a impossible hurdle for iOS musicians to get over, as many of our samples need to be within a more storage-friendly format. Also, beat repeat functionality is oddly presented in the UI. I'll sometimes get the bottom half of the waveform represented visually, rather than the whole. Also, control of this feature is pretty clunky. I know it'll get better and my $7 will be worth it, but this is not easy for me to integrate into my workflow until these promised features are fixed.

Well made loopers are more plentiful these days but this one deserves special mention. Despite being met with among the bleakest interfaces ever, the ease of use and quality of results makes for an experience which is immediately enthralling. Sometimes the more basic designs are the best. One can relax focus on the sound rather than maintaining a surgically steady hand when making adjustments. Few loopers are this properly suited for remixing on the fly. It is also nice to have on the side when working out a composition; catch some clips and instantly see how they groove together. Great for many other purposes - voice students practicing harmonies, teachers demonstrating musical structural relationships, experimentalists working with found sounds, beginning groove-riders still in need of some training wheels or just about any mad sonic genius looking to add another apparatus to their repertoire. No matter what level of ability or area of musical interest, this is a must have app.
