iText Express

I've used this app since sine '08. I've written two novels on it, the latest of which will published next month. The app is very good for writing novels and other very long works because it's stable (I've never had a crash), very fast, never lags even with big files on a minimal mac, and it has a very good bookmark system to keep track of chapter titles and scenes, so you never get lost. Another plus is that you can change the color of the insertion point and have it ride on a horizontal line under the current line you are working on. One problem I have with Pages and Word is the tiny insertion point. I'm constalntly experimenting (Scrivener, Storyist, Bean, Storymill, Nisus, Mariner Write, along with Pages and Word), and iText Express and it's Pro version are the best of the bunch. I also like the company's other word processor, LightwayText.

I LOVE this app. But… sometimes its an idiot. It won’t recognize the plural of a word unless it has an apostrophe. And sometimes it autocorrects without the litte thing popping down. A lot of times if I’m going to type “didn’t” I pause before the apostrophe becasue I sometimes reach too far or not far enough and I think about where it is and it goes to “did” right away! So then I’m stuck with “did’t” and have to go back. And every time I try to pluralize a word, it won’t recognize it without the apostrophe. Like in one of my stories the charecters name is “Esther” and I tried to type “Esthers” becasue the form I was putting it in didn’t need an apostrophe and it didn’t recognize it! And if I tried to deal with it and move on, forgetting about the litte red line, it would immedietly correct to “Esther’s” even though it didn’t make sense! And the word count isn’t at the bottom of the page like I wanted, I have to click the little “i” thing and see it when I prefer just to casually glance at it whenever I feel like it. But aside from all that bad stuff about it (that is actually about three things but I stretch things a lot) its a REALLY nice app. I gave it four stars becasue of just those three things I obsessed over but it is a really great app and I really like it.

please note, my caps shift key finger is working intermittently. i have sent in a problem report, but have not received a reply. therefor, most of this eval is lower case. sorry, but “just the facts!" itext express does everything that apple’s no longer available textedit does. a simple four word evaluation is “it works besting textedit!” also let me add a three word incentive “IT IS FREE!” here are four more words “try it, you’ll like it!” OOPS, make that five words. i was counting on my toes, and lost count! well, text express is worth more than a four word, three word, five word evaluation. however, what more can be said about an application than it works, it is effective, it is a feature rich, it is easy to learn, it’s user interface is intuitive, it is enjoyable to use, it will wash your car, put money into your bank account, and give you everything free for life. OOPS, i think i went a bit far and stretched what text expresss will do for you! sorry, there are a lot of keys on my keyboard, and i like words. forget everything in my above eval after “enjoyable to use” and upto the end of that endless sentence. IText Express is a slightly altered take on TextEdit, the little text editor/word processor that came with your Mac. That’s a good thing. Most people aren’t aware of just how good TextEdit can be for many tasks. iText Express adds useful features like control of print margins, header and footer options, bookmarking, and automated footnotes, but is still small, simple and well-integrated with the operating system. In appearance and operation, it’s hardly distinguishable from TextEdit at first, and uses the OS X-native font and color pickers and TextEdit’s style menu. The documentation that comes with iText is comprehensive, so be sure to browse through it to find out all that is possible with this little app. If you’re like most people, iText Express might be all the word processor you need in routine use. Be sure to check it out before spending a dime on something else. Oh, and to he who posted the request for a word count, iText already has one. Select "Format - Document Info" or press Command+Y. You get a pane with word count, line count, page count, and other document statistics.

First off, I would like to say a few things about this word processor. I do like all of the different fonts and sizes, but I have a concern that is a big problem for me…. I can’t seem to find out how to open a document form my flash drive!!! I’m sure there s probably a way, but I don’t have time to go deep into the web to find out how to do it (sounds lazy but still, some people relate to me—) I would love it if you take my recomendation into mind when I say that the “open file” option should be more visible.
