ipiit - Grocery Scanner for Food Allergies & Diets

I'm on the IFM elimination diet, so I downloaded ipiit to help me while shopping. It can filter for all my elimination foods except soy. Otherwise, I would give it 5 stars. The app allows you to vote for missing filters. The filter selection process was easy and stored in your profile. I scanned barcodes for several products that were "all but one" compliant and it told me "not for you". I did find a false negative for GMO compliance for one product that I reported. But there's no way within the app to "dispute" the database, so I sent a separate e-mail.

This app allows you to scan a barcodes and select food preferences, rate foods, see their nutritional value, ingredients and certifications (i.e. Organic, non-GMO, etc). I am on an elimination/thyroid/auto-immune diet and the transparency of the ingredients in my food is so important. I can scan, save or compare foods. I can select s food and according to the preferences the app will let me know "Not for you" and even take it a step further and suggest same foods by other brands. Love this! Others have commented that this app does not have a large enough database or some non-GMO foods come up as not being certified non-GMO. That is true because it is a newer app and not all foods that are non-GMO maybe in found certified databases. This app is all about community and you can submit photos and more will be added. I have given them 5 stars because the idea and innovation and interface is easy to use and a lifesaver. People continue to contribute and updates come, and this app will be amazing!

I’ve recently had to overhaul my eating and grocery shopping habits due to an ill family member. Severely limiting or cutting out soy, dairy, gluten, GMOs, food with antibiotics or hormones is a massively daunting task, but this app has made it so much easier!! It’s simple to use and there are far more ‘exclusion’ options than the other apps I tried. I specifically like the yes/no answer it gives on food... if I had time to read a lot about the grocery item I wouldn’t need the app. The database has some limitations, but it’s fun that you can send in pictures of missing items and they can add them in! Having that user interaction in database improvement should speed things along. Great pick!

I’m allergic to MSG and unfortunately mass food production companies like to use aliases for this. This app is very helpful for me to stay away from foods with MSG. I can even set it for other options that I want to keep away from. It’s still up and coming so there are foods that aren’t in the system just yet - and some of it may be that I’ve stumbled across a niche brand. There’s a pop up that asks you to kindly submit three pictures for them to add the unknown item for them to include. It’s quick and easy, and your helping them help others too!

I stopped using the app because a lot of items were not listed. Also, my food allergies have shifted, back then I had barly allergy and tried requesting Barley Free for preferences- I never got that option. Now I need to request All Soy free (they have 4 soy free options including soy oil soy lectin and 2 others) This is one of the TOP 8 allergens and it’s not included in the basic preferences list? I requested them all since I flare up with any type of soy- but I know this option will never make it on my list. What’s the purpose of using this app then if I am straining to read small print anyway? No thanks. UPDATE: guys I found a better app that serves these purposes and is partnered with Thrive (Whole Foods) It’s called ShopWell Create a profile of what to avoid and your diet and what you want LESS OF in your diet- I learned that Vegetable Oil is made from Soy from the app! Also— they haven’t updated this ipiit app in over 2 years you can see this from the App Store
