Goal Zero Power

The app works, but still does not support any readings or measurements from any of the four add on battery tanks I added to my unit. Goal zero said these features were coming soon.... with over a year since an update, it looks like they are not actively developing the firmware for these devices or the mobile app. Sad, as I built a 6.2mW system only to see it recognize my base 1400.....

I’ve read some recent reviews where people had issues with this app. When I ultimately followed the directions (which were slightly confusing- hence minus one star) it worked perfectly. I took my Yeti 1400 out of the box, downloaded the app and pressed the wi-if buttton and followed directions. The confusing part was at the password stage. They set the default password for you and then you can set you own or check a box to Keep the Password. My suggestion is to use the default first time and then change it later. Once changed, only check the box to Keep it to move on. Also, I see issues with other users were they get bumped off and then have to reload or reprogram the app. At this point I found that when it tells you to redo or reload the app, simply go back one page and then forward again. When I did that, it connected immediately. Being able to monitor/control some functions from the app is great. I was able to monitor the status of the input and output remotely. I’d like to see new versions that allow more control and more readings.

The Goal Zero app is underwhelming. It’s not bad but it’s not all that good either. After fixing some connection issues the app has remained basic. If you have a Yeti generator then you get to turn on and off ports and basically get a mimic screen of the info on the screen of the generator. What you don’t get is any special function that would deem it necessary for keeping the app on your phone. The frequency of generator updates is basically null. As for the home backup system with Yeti expansion tanks.... well nothing there either. You can’t see the charge level on the tanks and it’s a much needed feature especially if you count on the generator to be ready to keep your family up and running during power outages. The app needs a hard look by Goal Zero. It should assist the user not just take up space on a phone. Make it useful especially for home back up users. 1. Show the users, using solar panels, if their panels are in prime positions. 2. Show the tanks and their status, levels and time to charge. 3. System alerts to dropped power. 4. If the generator is actively powering the home via transfer switch. 5. A kilowatt to use calculator. So users can input appliances energy consumption and how long they can run it on current available generator power. So you can see how adding that fan you want to power will affect the run time of your other items in your house. All from the app.

I have had my Yeti 1400 for six months and have never been able to pair the app to the Yeti. I have tried 3 different wireless routers from different manufacturers. The Yeti’s Wi-Fi icon will stop flashing, so I believe the Yeti is connect to my Wi-Fi but the app doesn’t then see it. So many products have a pairing system like this. As a developer myself I know it’s not that hard. On top of that, no app updates in over a year, so either they can’t repro the issue, or they don’t care. I see enough similar reviews here to think they can repro it just fine. I have been on iOS 13 the whole time. Currently on iOS 13.4.

This app has made my yeti 1400 way more useable. I can check the charge remotely, which has become somewhat addictive. My only qualm is that sometimes there is a lag of 15-30 seconds to “connect anywhere” through the web. Sometimes it needs to be physically reset just to connect at all. Otherwise, impressive addition to an innovative product line.
