Gaia is a European Space Agency (ESA) satellite. It’s five year mission is to construct the largest and most precise 3D map of our galaxy, the Milky Way, this will contain over 1 billion astronomical objects, mainly stars but also planets, comets, asteroids and quasars among others. The spacecraft will monitor each of its target stars about 70 times over the course of the mission in order to measure the precise motion of each star. The Gaia Alerts project finds objects which change, appear, or disappear in the data sent from the Gaia satellite, and announces them to the world in real time. These objects are called transients and they could, among other things, be stars exploding as supernovae, or black holes swallowing stars...
