Eggcase Hunt

The Great Eggcase Hunt is a Shark Trust citizen science recording project aiming to discover where different species of sharks and skate lay their eggs (which are protected in a toughened ‘eggcase’ or ‘mermaid’s purse’). Get involved by heading to the beach in search of eggcases and use the app to identify what you’ve found. Report your mermaid’s purses to the global Great Eggcase Hunt; if in the Netherlands, to the Dutch Shark Society’s ‘Grote Eikapsel Jacht’; or, if in Portugal, to the Portuguese ‘APECE‘. Key features of the app include: • Advice on how best to prepare eggcases for identification • Encyclopedia of egglaying sharks and skate commonly encountered in Northwest and Southwest Europe • Species ID guides • Step-by-step identification tool for eggcases in Northwest and Southwest Europe • Recording form with access to GPS location and ability to take and upload photos • User profile and logbook keeps track of your finds submitted via the app • Capacity to change between English, Dutch and Portuguese for region/language Established in 1997, the Shark Trust is the UK registered charity dedicated to safeguarding the future of sharks through positive change.
