Donor on Call (DoC) mobile app is a technology-based humanitarian service where matching blood group donors are located nearby the recipient’s blood bank on “real-time location” basis. On raising a blood request, it locates donors physically present within a certain radius at that time (last spotted) and notifies them. The donor can then accept and coordinate or in an SOS situation, the requester may call donor by touching a CALL button. The objective is to minimize response time, reduce blood storage and refrigeration needs. As a result, saving precious blood from being wasted post expiry date. It is an illustration of a carbon-friendly process of environment-health linkage; as at times, the donor being nearest can simply walk or reach within minutes to the blood bank. Each donor is hence like a mobile blood bank. This initiative is mentored by Dr. Dharma Choudhary, who is a globally known hematologist and stem cell physician, alumni of AIIMS, CMC Vellore and British Columbia General Hospital, Canada. He heads a Bone Marrow Transplant Center, which is amongst the finest and largest in Asia. The inspiration for this initiative undoubtedly comes from our committed donors, an instance of which is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5V6803pMn8o The app is a tribute to many such selfless donors who continue to participate in this endeavor. To begin with, the service would be limited to registered donors only, who can raise blood requests for themselves or others. As the donors proliferate, the services can be extended. By maintaining the blood count record of donors, we aspire to counsel them on healthy lifestyle including activities like nature walks, cycling, running etc. Review glimpses at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57xmWaVq9XU towards sustainable donor health. DoC itself is an initiative of IIT Bombay alumnus in collaboration with a committed technical team in India and the Silicon Valley in the US. Hailing from different regions and backgrounds, the team has collaborated to conceptualize and deliver this beta version. We hope to maintain and update it on a sustainable basis.
