Dark Mist

Definitely appreciate the hard work that went into this game. The mechanics are solid and the strategy for each character is refreshing. The artwork is gorgeous and each monster portrait is distinct from the others. The music definitely suits the game. I managed to beat the game on Lv 1 difficulty (1 of 8) with the Berserker, and I was throughly challenged the whole way through. The props and upgrading cards adds another layer of depth and strategy to hone your hero into surviving the 5 levels. After each level, you visit a shop to buy new cards, props (provide passive and reactive effects), and upgrade or delete cards from your deck using gold from level ups and defeating monsters. Sorta reminds me of Card Quest in terms of strategically picking the order of how you defeat enemies, But sets itself apart with the life deck (cards you’ve yet to play) and block decks (your discard pile). Not to mention monsters attack by taking your cards based on their attack power, starting with your block deck, then move onto your life deck if you run out of block. Each card has an energy cost to play it, and like deckbuilder games, you discard the cards left in your hand once you end your turn and draw five more cards from the life deck. The standard mode also has a custom mode to add more ways to play the game. There is also a daily challenge for players who want to compete against others. The game is a worthwhile purchase and I can’t wait to put more time into it.

I’m a big fan of card roguelikes and this one definitely stands out. It’s gameplay is unique of cards entering and leaving your life/discard piles and going into the monster “hand,” it adds a lot of interesting strategy and it moves quickly enough I don’t find myself waiting for cards to play out. Apart from having a repeated issue with the stargaze card freezing gameplay, I haven’t noticed any major bugs and have cleared up to difficulty 4 (once with each class). I definitely recommend it and for $0.99 it’s a steal!

Solid entry in the card/roguelike genre, and so far I’m preferring it to their last game, Blood Card. Interesting decisions to make, and a good challenge for survival. One big wish, though, for an update, are more icons on the cards. It’s been a pain, especially when first trying to learn the game (but a pain regardless), not to be able to see what cards do, even broadly (e.g., 2 damage), without selecting and reading the card. The sword is already in the top right... just put the attack damage number there, like the enemies have in the lower left.

I’m a deck building rogue fan and only a few games have really added to the mechanics of the first of the genre: Dream Quest. Slay the Spire has, Monster Train has, and now Dark Mist. One of the thing that strikes me the most is how unique the classes are. Not only do they play vastly differently from each other, but they don’t play like other games in the genre. Too soon to tell if is balanced but it’s fun while I figure it out. Well done developers. The game is visually rough around the edges but it’s a hell of a lot better than dream quest.

Currently I’ve unlocked every character. They are all super fun in their own way. I wish there was more characters. Idk how long it will stay on my phone but it’s solid gameplay with easily hours of fun. I expect greater things to come. Overall very fun.
