This app seems inspired by ChefSteps Joule replete with short video clips, visual doneness guide, lighthearted quips, etc. Yet, it feels unfinished both in recipe breadth and app functionality. Often the X button is hidden by the video background. I had to tap around randomly to find it so I could close the video and go back to the previous screen.
The remote control panel functions just say “Hey there! Be patient. Soon you will be able to connect to your precision cooker via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth”. At first I thought it just needed additional time to discover and pair, so I waited a little bit and tried again. Instead what it means to say is this feature is not yet implemented. Better idea: don’t have the control option in the first place until it is working or at least in Beta. Confusing.
The hardware itself seems OK... pretty much a shameless clone of the ANOVA precision cooker, except you can’t take the Chefmate apart for cleaning, and it’s a bit noisy/cavitating until the water level is up near the Max line.
Despite the app, we pellet smoked and then Sous Vide cooked up some great pork tenderloin and the next night beef filet mignon. A quick sear in a cast iron skillet finishes. Liquid from the sous vide bag makes a great starting point for a pan sauce. Everyone was blown away with the taste.
This reminds me that the amazing thrills of sous vide as a cooking technique is quite separate from the merits of the equipment itself.

Hi PianoGeoff,
Thank you for trying out our app! As you noted, it is a good start, right! We are in the process of adding more recipes and more functionalities to the app. We frequently update the app to fix any bugs we come across, including the sneaky X button that was hidden by the video background.
Only selected models support the Bluetooth and WiFi version and they are scheduled to hit the stores any time now. Be on the lookout for the RJ39-WIFI model, and take control over your precision cooker like never before!
Please let us know if we can do anything else to improve your cooking experience.
