Byzantine music basically uses a "relative to previous" input method, in which you start from a known base and you go up or down, depending on the next symbol. There are 3 modes (the enharmonic, which is like the Major european scale, the diatonic and the chromatic). By no means this is a complete representation of the Byzantine Music! You should listen to your teacher to fully understand all the elements described.
