Barton Tiles® for the

I love this app! As other reviewers have commented, it saves SO MUCH TIME by not requireing that we set up physical tiles. A couple of suggestions, especially as there have been no updates for a long time: 1.) add a brief tutorial to show tutors where to find special tiles, 2.) update support for newer iPads (this is not a problem for me, yet), 3.) add support for multi-finger touch (my students love to try to divide words into syllables with both hands, which inevitably crashes the app, 4.) allow persistence of tiles placed in the special bar (no idea what to call it; it’s the bar where you can place tiles for quick access). To answer questions about schwa, the blank tile, and consonant “y”: double tap the “e” tile for schwa, the “z” for the blank tile, and the vowel/yellow “y” for consonant/blue “y”. I had to ask my mentor about the schwa, and my son figured out the others by tapping every letter to see if there were others which changed. Hence, my suggestion for an app tutorial.

On my son’s 4th gen it works. I did contact them, I got a reply, but not a helpful one. On the 4th gen, it works well enough, crashing only a few times. The schedule in the book and the tiles seems to be off by 1 lesson, but my last kit was used, perhaps that’s why. The app is very helpful but the price is not reasonable by any measure. I feel trapped in some ways. On the other side of that at least they where willing to open the lessons on the app although I bought it used. This was helpful. I doubt, however, if I have to pay $30 per lesson that I would by new. I prefer the new kits but the cost of the kit, shipping & tiles is tough. The program itself is very good and is why I work hard to make it work. Customer service has been pleasant as well.

This tile app is a fantastic tool that erases the inconveniences of using the regular wooden tile pieces. Now, the "tiles" can be manipulated right on the iPad. It's a great timesaver. The app goes even further by providing pre built words for each lesson, though one can still individualize as needed. I also like the ability to create records and notes for each student, and how it remembers exactly where each student is at in the lesson. It's a great use of technology to enhance teaching and learning. My only negative- not sure I like the faux wood paneling background behind the tiles. I'd prefer a cleaner, less busy background.

This app is wonderful and worth every penny. I have purchased levels 3&4 and am very happy with both. My favorite this about this app is the time it saves me in tutoring my students. I no longer have to spend time setting tiles up, I don't have to pause our session to build words...I think this easily save me 10 minutes per session. The second this i love is portability. I can now tutor my students anywhere. There is no more lugging out my cookie sheet with magnetic tiles. This is easily my favorite app of all time!
