Mistreatment Misdiagnosis is likely to lead to mistreatment. Complications Besides maltreatment, lack of or incorrect communication itself can lead to complications for the patient. Prolonged hospital stay Patients with limited language proficiency usually stay longer in the emergency room (approximately 30 minutes) and stay 4 days longer in hospitals than the average patient. Increased readmissions Patients with limited language proficiency have 60% higher inclination to seek care in emergency care than the average patient. There is 50% higher risk of these patients being hospitalized and 20% more likely to seek care within 72 hours after discharge. Increased costs Misdiagnosis, mistreatment, complications, prolonged hospitalization and increased readmissions all increase costs for healthcare providers. In addition, healthcare professionals are likely to take more samples and do more research on patients who do not master the language.. ABOUT US The goal is to make healthcare better for all: Care to Translate, earlier called ‘Språk i vården’, was founded as a non-profit in the fall of 2015 by medical students from Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, and today it has become one of the most used translation tools in the Swedish healthcare sector. However, the issue that ‘Språk i vården’ was addressing is neither an easily solved problem, nor a problem limited to Sweden. It affects people all over the world, and to be able to work on it with full devotion, the company Care to translate AB was formed in 2018. The Company has received grants for the Swedish innovation authority Vinnova and been accepted to Sweden’s number one incubator Sting Accelerate.
